XL2002: Shaded Background Color in TIFF Picture May Appear Different Than Expected (307751)

SYMPTOMS

When you insert or paste a Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) file into an Excel worksheet, the background color in the picture is different from what you expected.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you create a TIFF picture in Adobe Illustrator 9.0.1 and then insert (or copy and paste) the picture in an Excel worksheet.

Adobe Illustrator uses custom color management to produce an image for printing that matches the screen patterns. Microsoft Excel does not support this color management.

WORKAROUND

If the TIFF file has color management enabled and you want to insert it into a Microsoft Excel worksheet, follow these steps:
  1. Open the TIFF file in Adobe Illustrator and disable color management. Modify the color scheme as necessary to achieve the appearance that you want, without color management.

    For additional information about color management, refer to your Adobe Illustrator Help documentation.
  2. Save the file as a new TIFF file.
  3. Insert this new file into Microsoft Excel.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
