How to Configure Socks Proxy in Internet Explorer 5 for Macintosh (307738)

The Socks Proxy service is an alternative to the Web proxy service for Macintosh clients. The Web proxy functions normally with the Microsoft Proxy Server 2 Web proxy service enabled.

Macintosh Client Configuration

1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 for Macintosh.
2. On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
3. In the Network box, click Proxies.
4. Click the Web Proxy box to enable it, and then click Settings.
5. Type the name or IP address of the proxy server your network uses to obtain access to the Internet.
6. Set the port to 1080.
7. In the Method box, click SOCKS, and then click OK.

Socks Proxy Service Configuration on the Proxy Server

1. Click the Socks service.
2. Start the service on the server, click Properties, and then click the Permissions tab.
3. Click Add, and then click Permit.
4. Set the source to Enable All.
5. Set the destination to Enable All.
6. Set the Port se to EQ.
7. Set the Port to 1080.

Limitations of the Socks Proxy Service

You cannot use any authentication with the Socks Proxy service. You can set a filter on the inbound IP addresses for the individual client IP addresses.

Socks works on the IP level only. The administrator needs to have all browser requests resolved to IP address on the Macintosh client computers prior to connecting to the Proxy 2 Socks service. An internal DNS server may be required to resolve the Macintosh client requests. A DNS server could be configured to forward requests to the ISP's Internet DNS service.
