How to Load Policy Templates

To load Group Policy templates for Windows 2000, start the Group Policy snap-in. Before you can perform this procedure, you may need to start the Microsoft Management Console and then load the Group Policy snap-in.

The Group Policy file Gpedit.msc is installed to the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 folder during a default installation of Windows 2000. If you create a shortcut to this file by using Windows Explorer, a Group Policy shortcut will be created on your desktop.

How to Add a Windows 2000 ADM Template to a Group Policy Snap-in

  1. To start Group Policy, click Start and then click Run. In the Open box, type MMC and then click OK.
  2. On the Console menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in. In the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box, add Group Policy. Under the Group Policy Object, select Local Computer, and then click Finish.
  3. Select Administrative Templates from either the Computer Configuration branch or the User Configuration branch. These two nodes of the Group Policy tree are parallel to the Default Computer and Default User policy profiles in the System Policy Editor.
  4. Right-click the Administrative Templates branch, and then select All Tasks.
  5. Select Add/Remove Templates.
  6. Click Add.
  7. Load any or all of the ADM templates.
The new policy entries appear within the appropriate branches of the Group Policy tree.

Troubleshooting

The ADM template syntax for the Group Policy snap-in is now a superset of the ADM template syntax that is used by the System Policy Editor. ADM templates that are created specifically for the Group Policy snap-in do not work with the System Policy Editor.
