SUMMARY

Because Microsoft Clip Gallery can store all clip art on a central server, users on multiple computers can share clip-art images. However, updates need to be imported. This article explains how to configure and update Clip Gallery to use shared clip art.

MORE INFORMATION

The Clip Gallery packages and Clip Gallery catalog files store indexes and preview images for pictures in the Clip Gallery. These files cannot be used by multiple people simultaneously. By importing the file, each user can have access to the same set of clip art stored on a file server. The limitation of this process is that the file is copied locally, and changes made locally are not automatically updated to any other computer.

How to Configure Shared Images in Clip Gallery 3.0 or 4.0

  1. Create the shared folder, and then copy all of the clip art and clip-art packages that you want to share to this folder.
  2. On each computer, follow steps 3 through 5 in this section of this article to disable installed clip-art packages (optional), and steps 6 through 12 to import the shared clip art.NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  3. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  4. In the Named box, type *.cag, and then click Find Now.
  5. In the search results list, right-click each file, click Rename, change the extension to .old, and then press ENTER.
  6. Start Clip Gallery. If you are prompted that Clip Gallery is unable to locate the preview file, click to select the Do not attempt to open that file in the future check box, and then click OK.
  7. Click Import Clips.
  8. Navigate to the shared folder.
  9. In the Files of type box, point to the arrow, and then click Clip Gallery Packages.
  10. Double-click the .cag file. When prompted to quit and restart Clip Gallery, click OK.
  11. Repeat step 10 until all .cag files have been imported.
  12. Quit and then restart Clip Gallery.

How to Configure Shared Images in Clip Gallery 5.0

  1. Create the shared folder, and then copy all of the clip art and clip-art catalogs that you want to share to this folder.
  2. On each computer, follow steps 3 through 5 in this section of this article to disable installed clip art catalogs (optional), and steps 6 through 11 to import the shared clip art.NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  3. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  4. In the Named box, type *.mmc, and then click Find Now.
  5. In the search results list, right-click each file, click Rename, change the extension to .old, and then press ENTER.
  6. Start Clip Gallery, and then click Import Clips.
  7. Navigate to the shared folder.
  8. In the Files of type box, point to the arrow, and then click Clip Gallery catalogs.
  9. Double-click the .mmc file. When prompted to quit and restart Clip Gallery, click OK.
  10. Repeat step 9 until all .mmc files have been imported.

NOTE: Some of the folders within the clip-art folder may not contain an .mmc file because the clips are part of another .mmc file.
  11. Quit and then restart Clip Gallery.

Adding New Clips

To add new clips, create a new clip gallery package or clip gallery catalog, and then import the package or catalog from each computer.
