FP2000: The Menu Bar Is Missing or Add-in Not Loaded (307233)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft FrontPage, the menu bar may be missing or an add-in is not loaded.

NOTE: To view what add-ins are available, click Add-Ins on the Tools menu.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Cmdui.prf file is damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: If the menu bar is missing

Rename the Cmdui.prf file. For more information about renaming the Cmdui.prf file, please see the "More Information" section later in this article.

Method 2: If the add-in is not loading correctly

Remove the add-in, rename the Cmdui.prf file, and then reinstall the add-in.

To rename the Cmdui.prf file, follow the steps appropriate to your operating system.

NOTE: The next time that you start FrontPage, a new Cmdui.prf file is created.

Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE)

  1. Quit FrontPage (if it is running).
  2. Double-click My Computer.
  3. On the View menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
  4. Under Advanced Settings, click Show all files, and then click OK.
  5. On the File menu, click Close to close the My Computer window.
  6. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  7. In the Named box, type cmdui.prf.
  8. In the Look In box, click the drive on which Windows is installed (usually drive C), and then click Find Now.

    The file is located in the Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\State folder.
  9. In the Search Results box, right-click the file, and then click Rename.
  10. Type cmdui.old, and then press ENTER.
  11. Start FrontPage.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

  1. Quit FrontPage (if it is running).
  2. Double-click My Computer.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
  4. Under Advanced Settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
  5. On the File menu, click Close to close the My Computer window.
  6. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  7. In the Search for file or folders named box, type cmdui.prf.
  8. In the Look In box, click the drive on which Windows is installed (usually drive C), and then click Search Now.

    The file is located in the Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\State folder.
  9. In the Search Results box, right-click the file, and then click Rename.
  10. Type cmdui.old, and then press ENTER.
  11. Start FrontPage.

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

  1. Quit FrontPage (if it is running).
  2. Double-click My Computer.
  3. On the View menu, click Options, and then click the View tab.
  4. Click Show all files, and then click OK.
  5. On the File menu, click Close to close the My Computer window.
  6. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  7. In the Named box, type cmdui.prf.
  8. In the Look In box, click the drive on which Windows is installed (usually drive C), and then click Find Now.

    The file is located in the Winnt\Profiles\user name\Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\State folder.

    NOTE: More than one instance of the Cmdui.prf file may be present on your hard disk if there are multiple users that log on to your computer.
  9. In the Search Results box, right-click the file, and then click Rename.
  10. Type cmdui.old, and then press ENTER.
  11. Start FrontPage.

Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP

  1. Quit FrontPage (if it is running).
  2. Double-click My Computer.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
  4. Under Advanced Settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
  5. On the File menu, click Close to close the My Computer window.
  6. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  7. In the Search for file or folders named box, type cmdui.prf.

  10. Type cmdui.old, and then press ENTER.
  11. Start FrontPage.
