Local Tasks Are Displayed When You Try to View Tasks on a Remote Computer (307186)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q307186

SYMPTOMS

If you view the Tasks folder of a remote computer (\\server name\C$\%WINNT%\Tasks), the scheduled tasks that are listed pertain to the local computer, not the remote computer.

CAUSE

The %WINNT%\Tasks folder contents depend on the registry, and the Desktop.ini file in this folder refers to a CLSID in the registry. It queries this CLSID from the registry that is being loaded, and in this instance, it is the local computer's registry. This CLSID loads a shell extension, and the shell extension identifies the Scheduled Tasks folder for the local computer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, open the network share of the remote computer (for example, \\server name), and then double-click the Scheduled Tasks icon from this window to view the remote computer's tasks. This occurs because this connection is designed to query the remote computer, not the local registry.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
