SYMPTOMS

When you drag a Microsoft Office document file onto a shortcut that points to the associated Office program, the file may not open.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the shortcut points to the program's entry on the Start menu instead of to the actual executable file for the program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, create a shortcut to the executable file for the program.

Windows XP Help includes instructions for creating a shortcut. To locate the instructions, click Start, and then click Help and Support. Type creating a shortcut, press ENTER, and then click the topic Put a shortcut on the desktop.
