How to Manually Place Your Computer Into Standby Mode or Hibernation Mode (307017)

WARNING: While the computer is in Standby mode, information that is currently in computer memory is not saved to your hard disk. If there is an interruption in power, information in memory will be lost. Because of this, you may want to save your work before you place your computer into Standby mode.

To manually place your computer into Standby mode or Hibernation mode, click Start, click Shutdown, and then click Stand by or Hibernate. If Hibernate is missing, you must set up your computer for hibernation:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Power Options, and then click the Advanced tab.
3. In the When I press the power button on my computer box, click Standby or Hibernate. Note that these options may not be available if your computer hardware does not support Standby mode or Hibernation mode.
   
   NOTE: You can also click Standby or Hibernate in the When I close the lid of my portable computer box (if you are using a portable computer), or in the When I press the sleep button on my computer box (if your computer has a Sleep button).
