XCCC: The RVP Protocol Is Not Displayed Even Though Instant Messaging Is Installed (306997)

SYMPTOMS

When you view protocols, the RVP protocol may be missing, even though Instant Messaging is installed properly. In Exchange System Manager, if you expand Global Settings, you may also receive the following error message:

The Instant Messaging global settings could not be found. Instant Messaging may not be installed properly.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the Instant Messaging Global container is missing in ADSI Edit in the following location:

Configuration
   <domain_configuration_container>
      Services
         Microsoft Exchange
            <domain>
               Global Settings

Either there is a permissions issue or the Instant Messaging container is missing.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, repopulate this key by running Setup with the /forestprep switch.

MORE INFORMATION

You cannot re-create this container by removing and reinstalling Instant Messaging.
