FIX: SQL Server Enterprise Manager Restore Database Wizard Restores Database to Different Location or Name (306853)

SYMPTOMS

If you use the SQL Server Enterprise Manager Restore Database Wizard to restore a back up to an existing database with a different name, the physical file names on the Options tab default to names of the dumped database. If you click OK to continue the restore, the following error messages occur:

If the dumped database is on a current server
The file cannot be overwritten.
which indicates that it is still in use.
If the dumped database is on different server
Device activation error
if the path does not exist on the current server.

If the physical file names change to allow the restore to complete, a subsequent restore of the same back up still shows the same file names of the dumped database. However, no errors occur and the restore completes successfully.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem either:

Restore the backup file to a new database with the Restore Database Wizard. The physical file names match the new database name.

Change the physical file names appropriately on the Options tab.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2.
