Uploading a File with a Long File Name to a Deeply Nested Folder May Cause an Active Server Pages Error (306466)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001, when you upload a file with a long file name to a deeply nested folder through the portal site, it may cause an error message similar to the following:
HandlUploadedFile.asp " Active Server Pages error "ASP 0115" Unexpected error A trappable error(C0000005) occurred in an external object. The script can not run for Active Server Pages error "ASP 0240" Script Engine Exception .../HandleUploadedFile.asp
After this error occurs, if you access the portal site from a different client, you may get another error message saying that an access violation occurred at Dashboard.asp, and you may also get an ID 5 error Event from Event viewer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for SharePoint Portal Server 2001. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The version of the hotfix should have the following file attributes or later:

   Date          Time      Size        File name     
   -------------------------------------------------------

After the hotfix is installed, the following files will have the listed attributes or later:
   Size    File name     
   --------------------------------
     8,192 HandleUploadedFile.asp
   196,608 TahoeUtils.asp
				

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Service Pack 1.
