Office Keyboard: Hotkeys May Not Respond Properly (306356)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the Hotkeys on your Microsoft Office Keyboard, the Hotkeys may not respond as expected. Also, you may see the following lists in Device Manager, instead of the label of your keyboard.

Under Human Interface Devices (HID):

HID-Compliant Consumer Control Device
HID-Compliant device
USB Human Interface Device
USB Human Interface Device

Under Keyboards:

HID Keyboard Device

Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers:

USB Composite Device


CAUSE

This behavior may occur when the Office Keyboard is plugged into the USB port before the Microsoft IntelliType Pro software is installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, plug the Office Keyboard into the PS/2 port through the USB-to-PS/2 adapter that is provided.

If you want to use the USB port, follow these steps:
  1. Download and install the IntelliType Pro 2.0 software. The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

    Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.
  2. Update the HID keyboard drivers:
    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    2. In Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
    3. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
    4. In Device Manager, expand Keyboards, and then double-click HID Keyboard.
    5. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
    6. In the Hardware Update Wizard, click Install from a list or specific location, and then click Next.
    7. Insert your device software CD-ROM, click to select Include this location in the search, and then in the file name drop-down box, type the following path:

      CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive: \Keyboard\Setup\Msh\Kbd\ Mskbd.inf

    8. Click Next.
    9. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.

      When the process is complete, Office Keyboard appears in place of the generic entry in Device Manager.
  3. Update the universal serial bus controllers driver:
    1. In Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, and then double-click USB composite device.
    2. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
    3. In the Hardware Update Wizard, click Install from a list or specific location, and then click Next.
    4. Insert your device software CD-ROM, click to select Include this location in the search, and then in the file name drop-down box, type the following path:

      CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive: \Keyboard\Setup\Msh\Kbd\ Mskbd.inf

    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.

      When the process is complete, Office Keyboard appears in place of the generic entry in Device Manager.
  4. Update the HID-compliant consumer driver:
    1. In Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices, and then double-click HID compliant consumer control device.
    2. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
    3. In the Hardware Update Wizard, click Install from a list or specific location, and then click Next.
    4. Insert your device software CD-ROM, click to select Include this location in the search, and then in the file name drop-down box, type the following path:

      CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive: \Keyboard\Setup\Msh\Kbd\ Mskbd.inf

    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.

      When the process is complete, Office Keyboard appears in place of the generic entry in Device Manager.
  5. Update the HID-compliant device driver:
    1. In Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices, and then double-click HID compliant device.
    2. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
    3. In the Hardware Update Wizard, click Install from a list or specific location, and then click Next.
    4. Insert your device software CD-ROM, click to select Include this location in the search, and then in the file name drop-down box, type the following path:

      CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive: \Keyboard\Setup\Msh\Kbd\ Mskbd.inf

    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.

      When the process is complete, Microsoft Office keyboard Consumer Collection appears in place of the generic entry in Device Manager.
  6. Update the HID-compliant consumer control device driver:
    1. In Device Manager, expand USB Human Interface Device, and then double-click HID compliant consumer control device.
    2. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
    3. In the Hardware Update Wizard, click Install from a list or specific location, and then click Next.
    4. Insert your device software CD-ROM, click to select Include this location in the search, and then in the file name drop-down box, type the following path:

      CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive: \Keyboard\Setup\Msh\Kbd\ Mskbd.inf

    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.

      When the process is complete, Microsoft Office Keyboard (USB) appears in place of the generic entry in Device Manager.
  7. Update the HID-compliant consumer control device driver for HotKeys:
    1. In Device Manager, expand Human interface devices, and then double-click HID compliant consumer control device.
    2. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
    3. In the Hardware Update Wizard, click Install from a list or specific location, and then click Next.
    4. Insert your device software CD-ROM, click to select Include this location in the search, and then in the file name drop-down box, type the following path:

      CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive: \Keyboard\Setup\Msh\Kbd\ Mskbd.inf

    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.

      When the process is complete, Microsoft Office Keyboard Hotkeys (USB) appears in place of the generic entry in Device Manager.
    6. When you are prompted, restart your computer.
  8. After the system restarts, return to Device Manager. If any yellow exclamation marks appear in Device Manager, follow these steps:
    1. Right-click the device that is marked, and then click Remove.
    2. When the removal process is complete, right-click Keyboard, and then click Scan for Hardware Changes.
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the scanning process, and then restart your computer.
