PRB: Errors When You Use Pocket PC to Browse to the Mobile QuickStart Tutorial (306159)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Mobile Internet Toolkit (MMIT)
  • Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer

This article was previously published under Q306159

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer 2000 (on a Pocket PC or Pocket PC emulator) to browse to the Microsoft Mobile Internet Toolkit QuickStart tutorial, you may receive the following error message (or similar), which indicates that the site cannot be reached or found:
The page cannot be displayed

There is a problem with the page you
are trying to reach and it cannot be
displayed.
NOTE: This error typically occurs when you use a proxy server. This error message varies depending on the message that the proxy returns.

If Pocket Internet Explorer is not configured to use a proxy server, you may receive the following error message:
The page cannot be found

The page you are looking for might
have been removed, had its name
changed, or is temporarily
unavailable.
If Pocket Internet Explorer is configured to use a proxy server, you may receive the following authentication error message:
You are not authorized to view this page

You do not have permission to
view this directory or page using
the credentials you supplied.

CAUSE

First Error Message

When Pocket Internet Explorer is configured to use a proxy server, the first error message typically occurs when you use a localhost address (for example, http://localhost/MobileQuickStart) to browse to the Mobile QuickStart tutorial. Because the proxy server cannot find a Web site at that location, you receive the "page cannot be displayed" error message.

Second Error Message

When Pocket Internet Explorer is not configured to use a proxy server, the second error message may occur. When Internet Explorer cannot access a network, or when there are conflicts with a network adapter or network adapter driver, a Microsoft Loopback Adapter may be needed. Without the Loopback Adapter, Pocket Internet Explorer cannot find the Web site and returns the "page cannot be found" error message.

Third Error Message

The third error message ("You are not authorized to view this page") is an authentication error that typically occurs when Pocket Internet Explorer is configured to use a proxy server and when you use the computer name to access the QuickStart tutorial, as in the following example:

http://<server name>/MobileQuickStart

You receive this authentication error because the proxy server does not allow Integrated Windows Authentication. By default, the Mobile QuickStart tutorial is configured to use only this type of Windows Authentication.

RESOLUTION

How to Resolve This Problem If You Are Using a Proxy Server

To resolve this problem when you use a proxy server, configure Pocket Internet Explorer to bypass the proxy for local addresses as follows:
  1. Open the Pocket PC emulator.
  2. From the Start menu, click Internet Explorer.
  3. In Internet Explorer, click Options on the Tools menu.
  4. On the Connections tab, select the Bypass proxy for local addresses check box.
  5. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
After you bypass the proxy server, you should now be able to use localhost or the local computer name to browse to the QuickStart tutorial. You must provide a user name and password because the Mobile QuickStart tutorial uses Integrated Windows security, and the Pocket PC emulator is not logged on to the network. How to Resolve This Problem If You Are Not Using a Proxy Server
