How to Publish a TCP/IP Printer Behind ISA Server (306071)

SUMMARY

This article explains how to publish a printer by using TCP/IP behind the Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server. This article assumes that TCP/IP printing is working properly on the LAN. To correctly publish TCP/IP printer on the ISA Server computer, you must create a protocol definition as well as a Server Publishing rule within the ISA Server Management console.

To publish a printer by using TCP/IP behind the ISA Server:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft ISA Server, and then click ISA Management.
  2. In the left-side pane, double-click the Servers and Arrays branch to expand it, double-click the your server name branch to expand it, and then double-click the Policy Elements branch to expand it.
  3. Right-click the Protocol Definitions folder, point to New, and then click Definition to start the New Protocol Definition Wizard.
  4. When the New Protocol Definition Wizard starts, type a name for the protocol definition you are going to create that is easily identifiable, and then click Next.
  5. NOTE: If you are using LPR printing instead of TCP/IP printing, you can use the following steps, with the exception that the port number you will use is 515 instead of 9100.

    In the Port Number field box, type 9100, click TCP in the Protocol Type box, and then click inbound in the Direction field box. Click Next.
  6. In the "Secondary Connections" screen, leave the setting at No, and then click Next.
  7. After you verify that the wizard summary information is correct, click Finish.
  8. In the left-side pane of ISA Management, double-click the Publishing branch to expand it.
  9. Right-click Server Publishing Rules, point to New, and then click Rule to start the New Server Publishing Rule Wizard.
  10. When the New Server Publishing Rule Wizard starts, type a name for the new rule you are going to create that is easily identifiable, and then click Next.
  11. In the IP address of internal server box, type the IP address of your TCP/IP printer internal network adapter. If you don't know the internal IP address, click Find, and then click Browse. Double-click your printer name, and then click Find to view all of the IP addresses that are assigned to the printer you chose. Find the internal IP address, click it, and then click OK. In the External IP address on ISA Server box, type the external IP address of the ISA Server computer. If you don't have this information, click Browse, click the external IP address from the list, and then click OK. Click Next.
  12. In the Apply the rule of this protocol box, click the name of the protocol definition you created in step 10, and then click Next.
  13. Click Any Request, and then click Next. Note that you may want to create a Client Address set so that only certain computers are able to obtain access to this printer, and then apply the Client Address set to this rule.
  14. After you verify that the wizard summary information is correct, click Finish.
  15. Quit ISA Management, and then restart the Microsoft ISA Server Control Service.
