This article was previously published under Q305924

SYMPTOMS

In some programs that read compact discs (CDs), when you view the table of contents for a CD, the program may not display the number of tracks and the time on the tracks correctly.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because programs that read the CDs that contain data and audio tracks (CD Extra/CD Plus) have two methods of reading the table of contents (TOC) information. Some older programs use an application programming interface (API) to read the tracks, and these programs expose all tracks, including a special lead-in track. Newer programs use the Media Control Interface (MCI) to control multimedia devices, and MCI filters the special lead-in track.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use a program that uses the MCI interface, for example, a recent version of Microsoft Windows Media Player.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

MCI is high-level control software that provides a device-independent interface to multimedia devices and media files. MCI includes a command-message interface and a command-string interface. These interfaces are supported by both IBM and Microsoft.
