Schannel Error Message 36871 When Receiving an EHLO SMTP Command (305088)

SYMPTOMS

The following error message may be logged in the Event log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Schannel
Event Category: None
Event ID: 36871
Date: 4/26/2001
Time: 11:17:34 AM
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER
Description: A fatal error occurred while creating an SSL server credential.
This message is logged twice (once when the SMTP service starts, and once when the first EHLO command is received).

CAUSE

This behavior is caused by the SMTP service processing an incoming EHLO command if no certificate is assigned to an SMTP site.

RESOLUTION

This is an erroneous Event log entry. You can safely ignore this message. To prevent this Event log entry, you must assign a certificate to the SMTP site.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
