SYMPTOMS

The Qfecheck tool may report that you need to reinstall hotfixes that you just installed. This behavior can occur if you run Qfecheck after you install a hotfix but before you reboot the computer.

CAUSE

Qfecheck reports which hotfixes need to be installed on a computer. If you run Qfecheck after you load a chain of hotfixes with the Qchain tool but before you reboot the target computer, Qfecheck reports that several hotfixes that you just installed need to be reinstalled. This behavior occurs because Qfecheck uses the cached programs for its check, not the files that were just loaded on the hard disk.

RESOLUTION

Do not run Qfecheck after you install hotfixes until you first reboot the computer because no useful information will be presented until the reboot. Before an installation session and after a reboot, Qfecheck properly reports needed hotfixes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
