SYMPTOMS

After you shut down your computer remotely (by using the Shutdown.exe tool or a similar tool) while a password-protected screensaver is active, you may receive the following Event 6008 entry in the Event log:
The previous system shutdown at time on date was unexpected.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if Winlogon does not log off the user, and because of this, the screensaver continues. After this occurs, a proper shutdown is not initiated.

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.

Note Because of file dependencies, this hotfix requires Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a and 299444: Post-Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a Security Rollup Package (SRP). If you remove this hotfix with only SP6a installed, Winlogon.exe and Rpcrt4.dll will be mismatched, and you will receive a STOP 0xc000021a error message after a restart.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, disable the password-protected screensaver.
