Caching Redirected Folders Can Use All Available Disk Space (304624)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q304624

SYMPTOMS

A Windows XP Professional-based computer that is joined to a domain with folder redirection enabled may run out of disk space.

CAUSE

By default, Windows XP Professional caches the contents of redirected shell folders. If the share that is being redirected contains more data than fits on the drive on the Windows XP Professional-based computer, the drive may run out of free space.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, disable the caching of the redirected folders by enabling the "Do not automatically make redirected folders available offline" Group Policy setting:

On a domain controller or workstation with the Active Directory administrative tools installed, open the appropriate Group Policy object (GPO) in Active Directory Users and Computers (Dsa.msc):
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.
  2. In the left pane, locate the domain or organizational unit (OU) in which the policy you want to edit is applied.
  3. Right-click the domain or OU, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Group Policy tab.
  5. Click the GPO, and then click Edit. A new window opens.
  6. In the left pane, expand the following items:
    • User Configuration
    • Administrative Templates
    • Network
    • Offline Files

  7. Double-click Do not automatically make redirected folders available offline.
  8. Click Enable.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Close the Group Policy window.
