OFF2000: Error Message When You Try to Start an Office Program: A Fatal Exception 0D Has Occurred at fff000fff (304483)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start one of the programs in the Microsoft Office 2000 suite, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
A Fatal Exception 0D has occurred at fff000fff.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if RealPlayer Basic is installed on the computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove Office 2000, remove RealPlayer Basic, and then reinstall Office 2000. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Step 1: Remove Office 2000

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click Microsoft Office 2000, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box that appears, click Remove Office. You receive the following message:

    Are you sure you want to remove Microsoft Office 2000?

  5. Click Yes.

    Office 2000 is removed.
  6. Click OK, and then restart the computer.

Step 2: Remove RealPlayer Basic

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click RealPlayer Basic, and then click Add/Remove. You receive the following message:

    Are you sure you want to completely remove the RealPlayer and all of its components?

  4. Click OK. You receive the following message:

    The RealPlayer has been successfully uninstalled.

  5. Click OK, and then restart the computer.

Step 3: Reinstall Office 2000

Insert your Office 2000 compact disc into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Microsoft Office 2000 Setup starts. Follow the steps in the Installation Wizard to reinstall Office 2000.
