SYMPTOMS

For Microsoft Exchange Server, when you attempt to pull a newsfeed from any microsoft.com news server, you may receive the following warning message (where news_server_name.microsoft.com is the host name or IP address of one of the microsoft.com news servers listed below):

Description:
The virtual server 1 tried to connect to server news_server_name.microsoft.com and failed.
For Exchange Server versions 5.0 and 5.5, when you attempt to pull a newsfeed from any microsoft.com news server, you may receive the following error message (where news_server_name.microsoft.com is the host name or IP address of one of the microsoft.com news servers listed below):

Description:
An error response was received to a newnews command from server Newsfeed news_server_name.microsoft.com (SS1007). The response code was 502. The pull feed connection has been terminated.
The list of microsoft.com news servers includes, but is not limited to:
  • betanews.microsoft.com
  • msnews.microsoft.com
  • news.microsoft.com
  • privatenews.microsoft.com
NOTE: News readers, such as Microsoft Outlook Express, can download from these news servers successfully.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because the microsoft.com news servers are not configured to allow newsfeeds.

RESOLUTION
