SUMMARY

This article explains hyperlinks and how to create them in Microsoft FrontPage.

A hyperlink represents a connection from one Web page to another Web page, to a different location on the same page, or to any other linkable site on the Internet or an intranet. The destination can be another Web page, a picture, an e-mail address, a file (such as a multimedia file or Microsoft Office document), a network directory, or even a program (its EXE file). A hyperlink can assume the form of text or a picture.

When a visitor to a Web site clicks a hyperlink, the destination is either displayed in a Web browser, opened, or run, depending on the destination. For example, a hyperlink to an Audio-Video Interleaved (AVI) file opens the file in a media player, and a hyperlink to a page displays the page in the Web browser.

In Microsoft FrontPage, you can create hyperlinks to any of the following destinations:
  • A page or file in your FrontPage Web
  • A new page
  • A page or file on the World Wide Web
  • A page or file on a file system
  • A template for sending an e-mail message
  • A bookmark
  • An Office document

    • Position the insertion point where you want to insert the hyperlink if you want to use the title of the destination page (for example, My Home Page) or location of the file (for example, http://local host/file name) as the hyperlink text.
  4. On the Insert menu, click Hyperlink.
  5. In the Create Hyperlink dialog box, locate the Web in which the destination page or file is located, click the page or file, and then click OK.

NOTE: If the destination page or file is in the current Web, click the page or file under Folder List, and then drag it to where you want the hyperlink on the open page.

Create a Hyperlink to a Page or File in a File System

When you create a hyperlink to a page or file in a file system, the destination page or file is displayed when a visitor to your site clicks the hyperlink.

Ensure that the destination of the hyperlink is in a location where all visitors to your site can access it, such as a network drive. If you want to create a hyperlink to a page or file on your local hard disk, use a UNC path (such as \\computer name\share\file.htm) instead of a local path (such as C:\Share\File.htm). Otherwise, when a visitor to your site clicks the hyperlink, the Web browser attempts to locate this file on the visitor's own drive C, and the visitor may receive an error message in the browser window.

To create a hyperlink to a page or file on a file system, follow these steps:
  1. Start FrontPage, and then open your Web.
  2. Under Folder List, double-click the page in which you want to insert a hyperlink.

  4. On the Insert menu, click Hyperlink.
  5. Click the Make a hyperlink to a file on your computer button to the right of the URL box.
  6. In the Select File dialog box, locate and select the page or file that you want, and then click OK.
