The Mofcomp Tool Does Not Work When You Try to Run the Tool from a CD-ROM (304082)

SYMPTOMS

If you try to run the Mofcomp tool (Mofcomp.exe) from a read-only volume, such as a CD-ROM, you may receive the following error message when you try to process .mof files:

: error SYNTAX 0X0089: This is not a valid MOF file
: Compiler returned error 0x89

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Mofcomp attempts to create temporary files in the folder from which it you run it, instead of using the %TEMP% environment variable. Because you ran the tool from a read-only source, the tool does not work because it must create temporary files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English-language version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
