OFFXP: Office Program Is Not Installed When You Use Standalone Product (304056)

SYMPTOMS

When you run Setup for one of the standalone Microsoft Office products, the Office program may not be installed, even though the installation was successful. In this situation, you do not see a shortcut for the Office standalone program, and the executable file for the program does not appear on your computer's hard disk.

CAUSE

You may experience this behavior if all of the following conditions are true:
  • You perform a custom installation for one of the Office suite products.
  • In this custom installation, you set an Office program (for example, Microsoft Excel) feature to Not Available.
  • When the Office installation is completed, you run Setup for a standalone Office product (for example, Microsoft Excel).
  • The program to be installed by the standalone Office product was set to Not Available during the earlier Office installation.
Microsoft Office XP and standalone Office XP products use Intelligent Setup to detect the installation state of currently installed features. In this situation, the Office program is not installed by the standalone Office product, because Intelligent Setup is mirroring the current state of the same program from the Office installation.

RESOLUTION

If Office and the standalone Office product are both currently installed, follow these steps to display the standalone Office program on the Programs menu:
  1. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel.
  2. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, select the standalone Office product, and then click Add/Remove.
  3. In the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box, select Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
  4. In the Choose installation options for all standalone Office product name applications and tools dialog box, click the icon next to standalone Office product name, and then click Run from My Computer.
  5. Click Update. When the update is finished, you see an icon for your standalone Office product on the Programs menu, and the product runs when you click this icon.
If you have an Office suite installed but you did not yet install the standalone Office product, use one of the methods provided in the "Workaround" section of this article.

WORKAROUND

To work around the default behavior for Intelligent Setup, use one of the following methods, depending on whether you are using a transform with the standalone Office product.

Installation Without a Transform

If you are installing a standalone Office product without a transform, and you want to make sure the behavior described in the "Symptoms" section does not occur, use one of the following methods.

Custom Installation

To work around the behavior described in the "Symptoms" section, click Complete under or choose and install type in the Choose the type of installation you need dialog box. This overrides the default Intelligent Setup behavior.

Use a Command Line Property to Disable Intelligent Setup

If you do not want to perform a custom installation, you can specify a command line property to disable Intelligent Setup. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the following command line, and then click OK.

    Path\Setup.exe NoFeatureStateMigration=1

    In the above command line, path is the full path to your installation source files, for example, the letter of your CD-ROM drive.
  3. In the Choose the type of installation you need dialog box, select Install Now, and then click Next.
  4. In the Begin installation dialog box, click Install.

Installation with a Transform

If you are using a transform to install a standalone Office product, you can use either of the following methods to disable the default Intelligent Setup behavior.

Disable Previous Installation State Migration in Feature Tree

The Custom Installation Wizard (CIW) has an option in the Set Feature Installation States dialog box that allows you to disable Intelligent Setup functionality for one or more features. To use this option, follow these steps:
  1. Start the CIW.
  2. In the Set Feature Installation States dialog box, select the feature at the top of the tree called Microsoft Office.
  3. Click Do Not Migrate Previous Installation State, and then click Apply to Branch.
  4. Complete the remaining dialog boxes in the CIW.
  5. Install your standalone Office product with the transform.

Embed a Command-Line Property in the Transform

If you do not want to use the NoFeatureStateMigration property on the command line, you can instead specify this property in a transform. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start the CIW.
  2. In the Modify Setup Properties dialog box, double-click NOFEATURESTATEMIGRATION.
  3. In the Value list, select Do not match feature states during installation.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Complete the remaining dialog boxes in the CIW.
  6. Install your standalone Office product with the transform.

MORE INFORMATION

The behavior described in this article for Intelligent Setup only occurs when you are installing an Office product whose programs are also included in an Office product that you already installed on your computer. For example, if you have Office XP Professional already installed, and you are running Setup for Microsoft Access 2002, Intelligent Setup mirrors the installation state for the Microsoft Access feature that is controlled by the Office XP Professional installation. Therefore, if you set the Microsoft Access feature to Installed on First Use during the Office XP Professional installation, the default installation state for Microsoft Access during the standalone Access 2002 installation is also Installed on First Use.
