OFF2000: Office Language Setting Does Not Change to Match Windows Language Setting (304002)

SYMPTOMS

When you change the menu and dialog box language in Microsoft Windows 2000 MultiLanguage Version, the menus and dialog boxes in your Microsoft Office programs are not updated to the new language as expected.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. The language setting in Microsoft Windows 2000 MultiLanguage Version changes only the operating system user interface, not the user interface of installed programs.

RESOLUTION

To change the language setting for the menus and dialog boxes in Microsoft Office programs, install Microsoft Office 2000 with MultiLanguage Pack.

How to Change Languages in Office 2000 with MultiLanguage Pack

After you install the Office MultiLanguage Pack with the languages that you want to use, follow these steps to change the language displayed in the user interface of your Office programs:
  1. Quit all Office programs.
  2. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office Language Settings.
  3. In the Display menus and dialog boxes in box on the User Interface tab, point to the arrow, and then click the language for the user interface in all Office programs.
  4. In the Display Help in box on the User Interface tab, point to the arrow, and then click either (same as Menus and Dialogs) or the language that you want to use in Help.
  5. Click OK twice.

Windows 2000 MultiLanguage Version allows individual users to change the user-interface language of their respective computer operating systems. This functionality allows multinational corporations to use a single install procedure to roll out Windows 2000 worldwide. Local users can then select the user-interface language, or the language can be set by Group Policy for Organizational Units.

Office 2000 MultiLanguage Pack combines support for all languages into a single product. The MultiLanguage Pack allows you to install various languages and then switch the Office user interface and online Help between those different languages.

The language setting of Windows 2000 MultiLanguage Version does not affect the language setting of Office 2000 MultiLanguage Pack. For example, if you choose to change the language setting of Windows 2000 MultiLanguage Version to Spanish, the language setting in Office 2000 MultiLanguage Pack is not changed. The Start menu, Control Panel applets, and other operating system features will be in Spanish. All Office programs will remain in the language originally set in the Office MultiLanguage Pack.
