PPT97: Error Message: PowerPoint Found an Error That It Can't Correct (302874)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows
This article was previously published under Q302874 SYMPTOMS
In a PowerPoint presentation, when you try to insert a movie from a file, you may receive the following error message:
PowerPoint found an error that it can't correct. You should save presentations, exit, and then restart PowerPoint.
CAUSE
This issue may occur if the [mci extensions] section of the Win.ini file contains more than 42 entries.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, reduce the number of entries in the [mci extensions] section of the Win.ini file to 42 or fewer. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start Microsoft Notepad, and then open the Win.ini file, which is typically found in the C:\Windows folder.
- Scroll down until you find the [mci extensions] section.
- At the beginning of each entry that you want to disable, type a semicolon (;). This prevents that entry from being processed when the computer starts. Repeat this step until there are 42 or fewer entries in the [mci extensions] section.
- On the File menu, click Save.
- Quit Notepad, and then restart your computer.
