SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Fatal Exception Error 0E has occurred at 0028:address in module VxD VServer (01)+00004fd7

The current application will be terminated.

CAUSE

This issue can occur when your Windows 98-based computer is configured with user-level access control.

This issue can occur in the following situation:

You configure the computer for user-level access control on a network.
You remove the computer from that network, and then connect it to a different network.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, change the access control setting to share-level access control. To do this, follow these steps:

On the taskbar, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click Network.
In the Network dialog box, on the Access Control tab, click Share-level access control, and then click OK.
Click Yes to restart the computer.
