Clipboard Redirection May Not Work on Terminal Server (302443)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

This article was previously published under Q302443

SYMPTOMS

Clipboard redirection may not function properly during your Terminal Server session. To determine if the clipboard is working properly:
  1. Establish a Terminal Server session.
  2. Start Notepad.exe on the remote computer.
  3. Type some text into Notepad, and then copy this text to the clipboard. To copy text, select it, and then press CTRL+C.
  4. Try to paste this text into Notepad on your local client computer. To paste text, click in Notepad so that you can see the insertion point, and then press CTRL+V. If the text you copied in step 3 is not pasted into Notepad, clipboard redirection is not working correctly.

CAUSE

Virtual Channels are required to receive advanced features (such as clipboard redirection and printer redirection) during a Terminal Server session. If the Virtual Channels are not being established, users are able to connect to the Terminal Server, but cannot receive all of the features that are normally available when Virtual Channels are established.

RESOLUTION

To troubleshoot this issue:
  1. Start Task Manager on the Terminal Server by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESC, and then verify that the Rdpclip.exe process is running. Note that by default, this process should start when you start your computer.
  2. Start the Terminal Services Configuration snap-in from Administrative Tools.
  3. Right-click the RDP-TCP Connection icon, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Permissions tab.
  5. Click the Users icon (which represents normal users logging on to the Terminal Server), and then click Advanced.
  6. Click Users, and then click View/Edit.
  7. The Permission Entry for RDP-Tcp dialog box opens. Verify that the Virtual Channels entry has a check under the Allow column, and that the Deny column does not have a check. Click OK.
  8. Click OK until all of the remaining dialog boxes are closed.
