The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q301230

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to recover items from the Deleted Items folder, you may receive the following warning message:

Outlook was unable to recover some or all of the items in this folder. Make sure you have the required permissions to recover items in this folder, and try again. If the problem persists, contact your administrator.

NOTE: Even though you received the preceding message, you can still recover the items.

If you attempt to remove items from the Recovery folder, you may receive the following message:

Outlook was unable to delete some items from this folder. Make sure you have the required permissions and try again. If the problem persists, contact your administrator.

Then, Background Cleanup may report the following event in the server event log:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: MSExchangeIS Mailbox Store
Event Category: Background Cleanup
Event ID: 1232
Description:
Error -2147221233 while hard-deleting messages in folder on database "Storage Group \Store Name".

CAUSE

This problem can occur if you use a view other than the Messages view (for example, a Sender, Subject, or Conversation Topic view), and then you delete a message from the Deleted Items folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install information store build 4712.5 (the entire Service Pack must be installed).

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the Isinteg ... -fix -test alltests command to remove the items from the Recovery folder and to fix the event IDs. Typically, an administrator uses this command. However, this command does not fix the root cause of the problem: The incorrect references to messages in the information store.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
