This article was previously published under Q301176

SYMPTOMS

When you try to import contact data that was exported as a comma separated values (.csv) text file that contains quotation marks ("") in the contact's name from Outlook 2001 for Mac, you may receive the following error message:
Line Number <X> of the text file contains an error and cannot be imported.
After you receive this error message, the import process may stop.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because the contact contains quotation marks in the Full Name field in one or more records.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove the quotation marks from the Full Name field.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The Outlook 2001 for Mac import routine does not recognize quotation marks that are in the Full Name field.

If you want to retain the quotation marks as a part of the contact's name, add quotation marks to the Middle Name field. To do this:
  1. Open the file in Microsoft Excel.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Replace.
  3. In the Find What field, enter the quotation marks and leave the Replace With field blank. All quotation marks are removed.
  4. Save the file and be sure to retain the .csv file type.
  5. Re-import the data.
  6. Modify any full name fields so that there are only quotation marks in the Middle Name field.
