FP98: "FrontPage 20002" Error Message When You Open FrontPage Web (301084)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q301084

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Web in Microsoft FrontPage, the following errors may be displayed in the event log on the server:
FrontPage 20002 isapi stream out cannot open file for writing OS Error: No such file or directory

-and-

cannot load the isapi application....shtml.dll

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if there is more than one version of the Fpexedll.dll file on the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove the extra copies of Fpexedll.dll from the IIS computer. You must remove the copy or copies from the location mentioned in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open the IIS MMC, and then right-click the computer name on the Internet Information Server tab.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Click Edit to edit the WWW service.
  4. Click the ISAPI Filters tab.
  5. If there are two (or more) copies of Fpexedll.dll, remove all but one of them. The remaining one should point to the correct location of Fpexedll.dll.NOTE: The Fpexedll.dll file is installed with the Microsoft FrontPage 98 Server Extensions on IIS. Its sole purpose is to provide backward compatibility with Microsoft FrontPage for Windows version 1.1 and Microsoft FrontPage for the Macintosh version 1.0.

If there are no clients using either FrontPage 1.1 or FrontPage 1.0 that are authoring on the server, all copies of Fpexedll.dll can be deleted, because the file serves no functional purpose and can slow network traffic.
