OL2002: You Receive a NDR When You Send MSN POP3 Messages (300897)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q300897

SYMPTOMS

When you send a message by using an MSN, the Microsoft Network, account in Outlook 2002, you receive the following non-deliverable report (NDR) in your Inbox:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: <subject>
Sent: <date and time>

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'username@hostname.com' on 12/31/2001 1:00 PM
   550 5.7.1. Unable to relay for username@hostname.com

CAUSE

This problem occurs because you connected to the Internet by using a third-party connection (DSL, Cable Modem, local area network (LAN), or Satellite). When you are not using a MSN connection, the following is the MSN Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server (the outgoing e-mail server) that is used to send messages:

secure.smtp.email.msn.com

This server requires Secure Password Authentication (SPA) to authenticate the sender before messages can be sent.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, enable Outlook 2002 to send MSN Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) messages with a non-MSN connection. First, you must configure your MSN POP3 account. To do this:
  1. Start Outlook.
  2. Click Tools, and then click E-mail Accounts.
  3. Click to select View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
  4. Double-click your MSN account to access its properties.
  5. Under Logon Information, type MSN User Name.
  6. Click to select the Remember Password check box, and then type Your Password.
  7. Click the More Settings button.
  8. On the Outgoing Server tab, click to select My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
  9. Click to select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Click Next, and then click Finish.
After you have configured the MSN POP3 account, you must use Send/Receive to force Secure Password Authentication for the POP3 server (pop3.email.msn.com) each time that you start Outlook 2002. To do this:
  1. Open Outlook.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the Mail Setup tab.
  4. Click the Send/Receive button.
  5. Under When Outlook is Online, click to select Schedule an automatic send/receive every x minutes check box, and then set the time interval.
  6. Click Close.
  7. Click OK.
