SUMMARY

Generally, you should not stop the Application Center 2000 instance of MSDE, the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine. However, if you must stop MSDE, the ramifications are not severe. This article describes these concerns.

Stopping MSDE will have the following effects:
  • Events and performance data will not be logged.
  • The user interface will not be able to display events and performance data.
  • Error events will be written into the Windows NT event log because of the cluster components' inability to connect.
All Application Center 2000 components employ retry logic. If MSDE is stopped and then restarted later, the components will reconnect when it does become available. However, during the time that MSDE is stopped the Application Center 2000 cluster components will log errors into the Windows NT Event Log every time they fail to connect.

To avoid getting connect errors while MSDE is stopped, you can turn off event logging and performance counter logging in the Application Center user interface. To do so:
  1. Open the Application Center 2000 user interface and expand the cluster.
  2. Right-click the Events section for the cluster, and then click Properties.
  3. Clear the Enable performance counter logging checkbox, and then click apply.
NOTE: If you try to view events or performance data with the Application Center user interface you may receive some errors in the event log.

When you restart MSDE, don't forget to restart the SQL Agent in Microsoft SQL Server 2000. If you do not, the Application Center cleanup jobs will not execute and the database will keep growing in size.
