SYMPTOMS

A WINS Lookup record replicates to other DNS servers that are authoritative for the zone that contains the record. This occurs even though the Do not replicate this record option is selected in the WINS Lookup record configuration. This behavior does not occur on a DNS server that is configured as a standard secondary that receives replication of the zone through a standard zone transfer.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the following conditions exist:
  • The zone where the record was added is Active Directory-integrated.
  • The DNS server that received the record is a domain controller (DC) in the same domain and receives zone replication through Active Directory.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this behavior from occurring, use a standard secondary zone type on a Windows 2000 server that is not a DC in the same domain that the Active Directory-integrated zone is being used.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
