"Fatal System Error" Error Message When You Use IP-in-IP Tunnel (300460)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP1
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP1

This article was previously published under Q300460

SYMPTOMS

When you use a Windows 2000 IP-in-IP tunnel, you may receive the following Stop Screen error message:
*** Fatal System Error: 0x000000d1 (0x00000006,0x00000002,0x00000000,0xF06D27CA)

CAUSE

This behavior is caused by a software defect.

This behavior occurs only if the tunnel becomes non-operational during the process of routing packets -- for example, if your Internet connection is lost. When you attempt to send an ICMP Destination Unreachable-type message, the server may fail with the Stop Screen error message listed in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, attempt to use a virtual private network (VPN) or an IP Security Protocol (IPSEC) tunnel instead of an IP-in-IP tunnel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
