SYMPTOMS

You may notice any of the following or similar symptoms when you use Microsoft Visio:
  • Graphic distortion, including problems in scaling.
  • Text distortion, including garbled or shifted text on printed pages.
  • Font and color substitution.
  • Errors when importing.
  • Errors when exporting.
  • Errors when printing or using print preview.
  • Blank pages are printed when you open a drawing.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when you use two computers with different default printer drivers. Visio uses the default printer driver as a filter for displaying and printing information. When a drawing is saved on one computer, the file includes information related to the current default printer driver. When the drawing is opened on a computer with a different default printer driver, a variety of symptoms can occur.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, you can install a Hewlett Packard (HP) LaserJet III printer driver as the default printer driver on all computers you use to edit or print Visio drawings. Set the printer driver as a local printer on LPT1. This prevents the printer information that is saved with each drawing from being different, and fixes errors associated with printer swapping.
