SUMMARY

This article describes several methods of limiting the collection of performance data in Microsoft Operations Manager 2000 (MOM).

MORE INFORMATION

There are several ways to limit collection of performance data in MOM.
  • You can disable the rule for a resource that you do not want to monitor. For example, if you do not want to monitor the Total I/O hit ratio when it goes below the threshold, disable that Performance Processing Rule.
  • In some cases, if there are too many sessions, you can choose to monitor only some instances of the counters.
  • By default, MOM collects "all" instances, which means every available instance. You can modify the rule to sample counters for only some specified instances, such as rdp_tcp8 and rdp_tcp9.
  • You can sample the counter less frequently. For example, modify the data provider for the rule to sample every half-day instead of four times an hour.
To adjust the sampling frequency and the instances that are monitored, follow these steps:
  1. Go to the Performance Processing Rule that you want to modify, right-click the rule, and then click Properties. Click the Data Provider tab, and then click Modify.
  2. In the window that appears, Windows NT Performance Counter Properties-name, under Instances, click the sessions that you want to monitor.
  3. To change the sampling frequency, go to the line Sample every ____, and then specify a different time interval.
  4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
