XCON: Error Message "Overlapped I/O Operation Is in Progress" When You Start the SMTP Virtual Server (300081)

SYMPTOMS

When you use Exchange System Manager to start the default Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) virtual server, you may receive the following error message:
Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.
After you receive this message, internal and external SMTP mail does not flow.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the SMTP service has been removed from the Exchange 2000 computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Add/Remove Programs tool to reinstall the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) SMTP Service, and then reinstall Exchange 2000. To reinstall the SMTP service:
  1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then double-click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  2. Click Internet Information Services (IIS), and then click Details.
  3. Click SMTP Service, and then click OK.
  4. In the Windows Component Wizard dialog box, click Next, follow the steps in the Windows Components Wizard, and then insert the appropriate CD-ROM when you are prompted.
To reinstall Exchange 2000:
  1. Insert the Exchange 2000 CD-ROM, and then double-click Setup.exe, which is located in the Setup\I386\ folder in the root of the CD-ROM.
  2. When you are prompted by the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Installation Wizard, click Next.
  3. Click Reinstall for the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Component, click Next, and then follow the steps in the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Installation Wizard.
  4. Reapply any hotfixes and service packs that were previously applied to Exchange 2000.
