Visio2002: "AD&L Functionality Is Not Available" Error Message When You Attempt to Use AutoDiscovery and Layout Template (300017)

When you attempt to use the AutoDiscovery and Layout template, you may receive the following message:
The AutoDiscovery and Layout solution requires that Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) be installed and running locally. Specify whether MSDE continues to run, or is stopped when Visio is closed.
Stop MSDE
Leave MSDE running
If you select Stop MSDE or Leave MSDE running, you receive the following error message:
AD&L functionality is not available in this document because it is not connected to a database. Please re-open solution.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you install the AutoDiscovery and Layout solution without first installing MSDE.
NOTE: If you install the AutoDiscovery and Layout solution on a computer that is using Microsoft SQL Server 6.5, the installation is completed, and you may receive a message stating that the "Network Center Solution Setup has completed successfully." However, when you attempt to use the AutoDiscovery and Layout template, you may receive the error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article, and then the template does not function.
You must have MSDE installed before you install the AutoDiscovery and Layout solution.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, uninstall the AutoDiscovery and Layout solution, install MSDE, and then reinstall the AutoDiscovery and Layout solution.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
