Visio2002: Port Count in the Network Shape Properties Dialog Box Is Incorrect for a Device in Your Network Diagram (300002)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Visio, when you view the properties of a network device in a network diagram that is based on your AutoDiscovery database, the port count for the device may not reflect the number of actual interfaces on the device.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if a network device uses virtual interfaces. AutoDiscovery and Layout does not discriminate between real and virtual interfaces at the Layer 3 level. As a result, when you view the properties of a given network device, the port count on the Network tab in the Network Shape Properties dialog box represents the total number of both real and virtual interfaces, rather than only the number of real interfaces.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, determine the number of real and virtual interfaces on a network device by using either of the following methods.

Method 1

To view the number of real and virtual interfaces on a device, follow these steps:
  1. Start Visio, and then open your network diagram.
  2. Right-click the device that you want to view, and then click Properties.
  3. In the Network Shape Properties dialog box, click the Interface tab to view the list of real and virtual interfaces.

NOTE: Real interfaces are indexed with a number and are named according to that number. For example, actual interfaces are listed as Interface 1, Interface 2, and so on in the Interface column. Virtual interfaces are not indexed and are listed as Interface. In addition, virtual interface names contain a V.

Method 2

  1. Start Visio, and then open your network diagram.
  2. Right-click the device that you want to view, and then click List Interfaces to view the list of interfaces on the device.

See the note under step 3 of Method 1 for further information about distinguishing between real and virtual interface names.
