OL2002: You Cannot Use the `Nickname' Field to Resolve Addresses (299962)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q299962

SUMMARY

When you type a nickname that is specified in the Nickname field of one of your contacts, the nickname does not resolve (display with an underline).

For example, you enter a contact for John Doe with a valid e-mail address and with a nickname specified as "Dad" (without quotation marks) in the Nickname field. In a new message, you type Dad in the To field, and then you click Check Names on the Tools menu to resolve the name. Outlook does not resolve the nickname to the e-mail address for John Doe.

NOTE: This feature was available in the Internet Mail Only (IMO) installation of Microsoft Outlook 98 and Microsoft Outlook 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

As an alternative, you replace the Display as field of the contact with the desired nickname. The Display as field does resolve the nickname successfully.

For example, you replace the Display as field for the John Doe contact with Dad. In a new message, you type Dad in the To field, and then click Check Names on the Tools menu. Dad resolves to the e-mail address for John Doe.

Use the following steps to change the Display as field:
  1. Open Outlook to the Contacts folder
  2. Open a contact item
  3. On the General tab, delete the current name in the Display as field, and then replace this with the desired nickname.
  4. Click Save and Close
Note In cases where you are entering a name that is very common (for example, the name "John") in the Display as field, use the name with an additional identifier, such as the first initial of the last name (for example, "John A."). This permits a unique name to be identified and resolved faster.
