Difficulties When You Install MMS Server over a Terminal Server Session (299492)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Metadirectory Services 2.2
  • Microsoft Metadirectory Services 2.2 SP1

This article was previously published under Q299492

SYMPTOMS

You may encounter some unexpected behaviors when you attempt to either upgrade or install Microsoft Metadirectory Services (MMS) over a terminal server session. After MMS stops, you encounter the following behaviors:
  • The following error message is displayed while installing the MMS files:
"Non-Fatal Error at Script Line 1252, could not create file"
The actual line number that is displayed may vary. This message is displayed several times, but you can click OK to get past these error messages.
  • When the MMS datastore creation process occurs, you may receive the following error message:
Creating MMS database: Could not create ism Error Code 19 1Failed to create database
  • When you try to log on to Compass, you receive the following error message:
    Invalid Password

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because there is another terminal server session that is running during which one of the following has occurred:
  1. The terminal server is running MMS.
  2. The terminal server has re-started the service.
  3. The terminal server has a lock on certain critical files.
In all of these scenarios, the files are in use, and this stops the database from being created correctly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, reset all terminal sessions before you install MMS:
  1. Log off the remote terminal server session on the MMS server.
  2. Log on to the local computer (not a remote session), click Start, point to Programs, click Administrative Tool, and then click Terminal Services Manager.
  3. Under All Listed Servers, click the server.
  4. You should have one Console Session, all other sessions should be named RDP-TCP#, which are all the remote sessions.
  5. Right-click one of the RDP-Tcp# sessions, and then click Log off.
  6. Repeat step 4 until all remote sessions are logged off. This should be a maximum of two as most MMS servers are running in Remote Administration mode.
Note: It is recommended to install the product from the local computer, and not through a terminal server session.
