This article describes how to configure Outlook to send and receive e-mail messages by using your CompuServe Classic Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) account (versions 4.0 and earlier).

NOTE: This article applies only to CompuServe Classic, which formats e-mail addresses as "user_name@cis.com" or "user_name@compuserve.com". This article does not apply to CompuServe 2000, which formats addresses as "user_name@cs.com". Before you configure Outlook to access your CompuServe Classic POP3 account, obtain a POP3 password for your e-mail account. To do so, use either of the following methods:
  • If you have the CompuServe Classic client software installed, run the go npx-92 command.

  • If you have the Virtual Key software installed and configured with your CompuServe credentials, browse to the following CompuServe Web site:
After you obtain a POP3 password, configure Outlook to access your CompuServe Classic POP3 account:
  1. Connect to CompuServe by using your existing CompuServe Classic dial-up networking connection.
  2. Start Outlook.
  3. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
  4. Click Add a new e-mail account, and then click Next.
  5. Click POP3, and then click Next.
  6. Type your name in the Your Name box, and then type your CompuServe Classic e-mail address in the E-mail Address box using the following format:

    00000.000@compuserve.com

    NOTE: Use a period (.) instead of a comma (,) in the user ID section of the e-mail address.
  7. Type pop.compuserve.com in the Incoming mail server (POP) box, and then type smtp.compuserve.com in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server box.
  8. Type your CompuServe Classic logon name in the User Name box (use a comma [,]), and then type your CompuServe Classic POP3 password in the Password box.
  9. Click Remember password if you do not want to be prompted for your password each time you log on (this step is optional).
  10. Click Next, and then click Finish to save your settings.
