Visio2002: Cannot Undo or Redo Changes Made to Inserted Objects (299157)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard
  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional

This article was previously published under Q299157

SYMPTOMS

When you insert an object from one program (for example, a Microsoft Excel worksheet or Microsoft Word document) into a Microsoft Visio diagram, then you deactivate and reactivate the inserted object, the Undo and Redo commands do not behave as expected.

CAUSE

When you insert an object into Microsoft Visio, make changes to the object, deactivate the object, and then reactivate the object, the undo stack is cleared. You cannot undo changes that you previously made to the object.

MORE INFORMATION

Each Microsoft Office program includes an Undo command. This command allows you to undo certain actions after you perform them; for example, if you type a value in a worksheet cell, you can undo the action. To use the Undo command, use either of the following methods:

  • Click Undo on the Edit menu.

    -or-
  • Click the Undo button on the Standard toolbar.
When you click the Undo arrow on the Standard toolbar, you can see a list of the actions you performed. This list is called the "undo stack." Normally, the undo stack is cleared when you perform an irreversible action, such as closing a file. When you reopen the file, no items are listed in the undo stack. The same is true when you deactivate an embedded object.

Microsoft Visio does not keep the actions performed to an embedded object on its "undo stack". Once the object is deactivated, you cannot undo changes that you previously made to an embedded object.
