RESOLUTION
Error
Insufficient disk space on the destination portal server to copy the catalog
Symptom
Propagation is not successful if there is insufficient disk space to successfully copy the catalog. An error (Event ID 7012) is logged in the Application log on the Dedicated Content Indexer (DCI) server that indicates this failure.
Resolution
Make sure that you have free disk space on the portal server that is equal to at least the size of the catalog that you are going to propagate plus an additional 50 megabytes (MB) of space.
Error
Copy is successful but there is insufficient disk space to bring the catalog online
Symptom
If the copy is successful, but there is insufficient working space (10 MB or greater) remaining, the propagated catalog is not brought online. An error (Event ID 7057) is logged in the Application log on the portal server indicating this failure.
Resolution
Free up disk space on the portal server. The amount that is needed to accept the catalog is specified in the log. After you free up disk space, either stop and restart the Microsoft Search service (Mssearch.exe), or manually initiate propagation again.
Error
Destination server incorrect or unreachable
Symptom
An error (Event ID 7012) is logged in the Application log on the DCI server, with the following text:
An error occurred during propagation to search server destination_servername
Details: 0x80070043 - the network name cannot be found
Resolution
Make sure that the destination server is reachable. From the DCI server, make sure you can ping the destination server and that the server name can be resolved by DNS or WINS. If these tests are not successful, you need to troubleshoot the underlying network problem.
Error
Network connection is faulty
Symptom
When you are viewing DCI workspace status in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) during propagation, you note the status appears as "retrying". An error (Event ID 7012) is logged in the Application log on the DCI server, with the following text:
An error occurred during propagation to search server destination_servername
Details: 0x80070035 - the network path was not found
Resolution
The network traffic may be so high that propagation is unable to successfully transfer the catalog. Try copying a large file between the servers as a test. If you cannot successfully complete the copy, troubleshoot the underlying network problem. Note that when a timeout occurs, Search keeps trying indefinitely every 60 seconds until the propagation is successful or until the administrator aborts it.
Error
Firewall/proxy in between servers
If you are going through a firewall or proxy server for propagation, you need to allow server message block (SMB) traffic through.
Symptom
An error (Event ID 7012) is logged in the Application log on the DCI server, with the following text:
An error occurred during propagation to search server destination_servername
Details: 0x80070043 - the network name cannot be found
Resolution
Ensure that you have sufficient access for SMB file transfers (this requires NetBIOS ports open because SMBs use the NetBIOS protocol to transfer data).
