The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition

This article was previously published under Q298814

SYMPTOMS

You are not able to upgrade, add or remove Named Instance components if all of the following conditions are met:
  • The computer running SQL Server is a Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition-based computer.
  • You are using Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition.
  • The double byte character set (DBCS) is used to name the Named instances.
NOTE: The Upgrade/Add/Remove Named Instance Components check box is dimmed during setup, and you are not able to select the check box.

Do not use DBCS characters to name the Named Instance if your environment meets all of the conditions in the preceding list.

CAUSE

This is a restriction of the setup program when you install SQL Server 2000 on a Windows 98 or a Windows ME-based computer.

MORE INFORMATION

You cannot install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) onto a DBCS Named Instance because of the same reason. The Instance Name combo box is dimmed in the ConnectToServer dialog box in the SQL Server SP1 Setup program.
