This article was previously published under Q298500

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Office programs on a Windows XP-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
Windows files must be installed for your installation to proceed.
Insert your Windows XP Professional CD-ROM now.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because you are installing Office from a local hard disk that contains the source files instead of from the CD-ROM. The setup program in Office attempts to install system files that are protected by Windows File Protection. Windows XP only accepts the signed versions of these files that are included with the Windows XP distribution media.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, install the Office programs from the CD-ROM.
