XL2001: Total Row in List Shifts After Adding Data in Earlier Version of Excel (298482)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2001 for Mac

This article was previously published under Q298482

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 2001 for Mac, when you open a workbook that contains a list that was created with List Manager, the position of the Total Row may be shifted incorrectly.

The word "Total" and the SUBTOTAL formula are incorrectly placed in the New Record Row. (The row below the New Record Row typically contains these items, and also contains the Total Row controls, which are seen when you click these cells.) In addition, if you click outside the List Object, the text and formula in the New Record Row may disappear.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following:
  1. Create a list with List Manager in Excel 2001.
  2. Open the Excel 2001 workbook in one of the following earlier versions of Excel:
    • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition
    • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
    • Microsoft Excel 2000

  3. In the earlier version of Excel, add data to the list, and then save the workbook.
  4. Reopen the workbook in Excel 2001.
This problem occurs because the List Manager is a new feature in Excel 2001. Earlier versions of Excel may cause unexpected behavior or data loss when used to edit files that contain list objects.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, download and install the Microsoft Office 2001 Service Release 1 file. To do so, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
To temporarily work around this problem, before you save the file, click a cell outside the list, so that the List Object is not selected.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac Service Release 1.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem only occurs if you save the worksheet when the list is active and the New Record Row is present.
