PRB: Oleaut32.dll Does Not Register When You Install MDAC 2.5 (298194)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.5, you may receive the following error message:
Error registering the OCX C:\Winnt\System32\Oleaut32.dll.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when you do not have administrative permissions to register Oleaut32.dll.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32).
  2. Locate and select the following subkey:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface

  3. On the Security menu, click Permissions.
  4. Set the local Administrator to Full control and select the Allow inherited permissions from parent to propagate to this object check box.
  5. If the local Administrator is not present, click Add to add the Administrator.
You can now install MDAC 2.5.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
