Sound Card Does Not Work After Upgrade to Windows 98 (298094)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
- Microsoft Windows 98
This article was previously published under Q298094 SYMPTOMS
When you upgrade your Compaq Presario Model 4704 computer to Microsoft Windows 98, your sound card may not function as expected. Your computer may no longer play any sounds at all, and you may be unable to start some games that require a sound card to start.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if your computer uses the ESS 1888 PNP sound card and came preinstalled with the OSR2 operating system. Windows 98 does not have the correct sound card divers for all ESS sound cards.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods to locate and install the Microsoft Windows 95 driver for your ESS sound card.
Method 1- Install the Compaq SoftPaq 7013 update for ESS 1869, 1887, or 1888 Audio-based cards.
Method 2- Install Windows 95 drivers from the floppy disk provided by the manufacturer.
NOTE: This floppy disk may be unavailable: Most Compaq computers use a Master Recovery Disk CD-ROM that is not able to update individual device drivers.
Method 3- Install Windows 95 drivers from the Web site of the sound card manufacturer.
